Ice Safety - a concern every winter

Recent and ongoing fluctuations to our normal winter temperatures demand attention to changing ice conditions if you plan to venture out on the ice.

Many of us enjoy getting out on our lake ice during the winter months.  However, the thickness of the ice is always a worry.  Mississippi Lake has a current flowing through it, which thins the ice.  In recent years, we've had vehicles break through the ice and even a fatality on our lake.

Our winters now have significant warm spells, cancelling winter sports on nearby lakes, as well as the Rideau Canal.  This winter, the Ottawa Fire Service has posted an excellent short video with rescue tips if you happen to break through the ice.
