In 2019, the Great Lakes Commission implemented an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Landing Blitz outreach event to educate recreational boaters and anglers about invasive species by engaging with them at boat launches at more than 440 locations in the US and Canada. We can all help slow the spread by making sure our boats are Cleaned, Drained, and Dried after every outing.
Why a Blitz?
Like Zebra Mussels, we may soon have other invasive aquatic species in Mississippi Lake that are spread by contaminated boat hulls, bilges, live wells and trailers.
Boaters need a gentle reminder that it is their responsibility to Clean, Drain and Dry their boats before they launch in another body of water. This is done through friendly chats and passing out information to explain the risks and how to guard against them.

Landing Blitz 2025
The MLA conducted its first Landing Blitz from 30 June to 13 July 2025. Volunteers chatted with boaters about the risks of spreading aquatic invasive species between water bodies, and to emphasise the need to clean, drain, and dry watercraft after they come out of the water.
All volunteers received training via zoom before the event. This included information about invasive species, why they spread in our lakes and how Clean, Drain and Dry can help. Each participant received a Blitz t-shirt and wore it proudly during the Blitz.

For fellow Lake Associations:
The Landing Blitz approach for slowing the spread of invasive species will only succeed if participation is widespread. Ontario cleaning and draining regulations require that boats are cleaned when being removed from a body of water to insure that invasives remain at that location and are not spread. So, we need to have ALL lake associations participate in this effort. For help organizing YOUR landing blitz, the following Checklist or recipe for success has worked very well for the MLA.
