Invasive Aquatic Species Survey

The MLA conducted surveys on the Lake for invasive aquatic species during three successive summers from 2016 to 2018, with the help of the Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists (MVFN) and volunteers from around the Lake.  Samples were collected and forwarded to MVCA for identification and analysis, and five different types of plants were confirmed, including: Curly-leaf Pondweed, European Frogbit, Purple Loosestrife, Phragmites and Eurasian Milfoil.

One or more of these plant species were found in all the locations that were surveyed: Kinch Bay, Kings Bay, McGibbons Bay, McEwan Bay, Hunters Bay, Pretties Bay, Code Bay, Mallochs Bay, Squaw Point, McIntyre Creek, Robertson’s Point, McNaughton Shore and Innisville Rapids.

Eurasian Milfoil in particular is extremely aggressive and can take over large areas of a water body in a few short years. This plant was found in scattered locations in Malloch’s Bay in 2017, but once established it quickly proliferated.
